How to Move Heavy Belongings

It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of packing and filling boxes with your belongings, but what about the items that are very large or very heavy? How do you move these to your new location? It’s not always easy, but there are several methods to get those heavier items from Point A to Point B.

Lighten Up

Often, there are ways to make a heavy piece of furniture lighter. If you have a heavy wardrobe, for example, you can remove the shelves and drawers to reduce some of the weight. A chest of drawers can travel separately from the drawers to ease some of the heaviness. If you’re creative, you can frequently reduce the overall amount to carry.

Some furniture may be disassembled, which can also make it easier to manage. Removing legs and other parts may also help. Be sure to keep the screws or fastenings in a bag that can be attached to the piece of furniture so you won’t lose the pieces.

Get Help

With enough hands, you can move anything. You’ve likely seen this in videos where multiple people lift a vehicle off someone. You certainly can’t lose by adding more people to lift a heavy item and get it around.

If you’ve hired a removals company, you’ll have extra people to help, but you may need even more. In this case, you can either hire extra hands or you can call in reinforcements. Friends and family members are often willing to help out if you need extra aid.

Use Sliders

Sliders are items placed under the corners of the heavy piece of furniture to help it move across the floor. There are special sliders for this process, which your removal company may offer, but you can also use common household items.

Towels or pieces of cardboard work well if you’re moving the piece across a slick floor like hardwood or tile. If you need to move it over carpet, look for something made of hard plastic, such as frisbees or smooth melamine bowls.

Consider a Dolly

Dollies are useful for items that are not overly large, but weigh too much to easily manoeuvre. These wheeled platforms allow you to place the item on them and then you tip it back. The item will lean against the back piece and you can then push it to where you need to place it.

Dollies usually have thin edges at the front of the platform to allow for sliding it under the piece of furniture. You can then wiggle it out once you have the piece where it needs to be. If you don’t have a dolly, you will want one for moving.

These methods can all help you move those extra heavy items in your home or office. If you’re still not sure about the best method, talk to your removals company to get some suggestions. They’re the experts!
