How to Reduce Clutter for House Moving

Packing up your home can be quite the endeavour and it’s often made more difficult by clutter. All those extra odds and ends that you think you need can take up space, as well as time. It’s best to get rid of them now and avoid moving all those unnecessary items into your new home. House moving is much simpler if you eliminate the excess.

While it may add more to your list of things to do, removing the excess clutter is an essential part of house moving. You’ll find that you spend less on removals companies when you have fewer things to pack. It also allows you to really have a fresh start when you arrive in your new home.

Discard Anything Broken

If you’re like most people, you’ve kept older items that are not functional. Perhaps they have nostalgic value or perhaps you simply want to repair them. However, if you haven’t had the item repaired yet, chances are you will never get to it. This is a good time to eliminate all the broken pieces from your home. It means less to pack and less to worry about.

Eliminate Things You Don’t Use

Perhaps you have a special baking tray for brownies, but have never used it. Or a toolkit that you were given years ago, but just never opened. Belongings that you never use are usually best sent out of the home. You may want to sell them off or give them away, but if you haven’t used them in months or years, then you probably don’t need them. Of course, the exceptions are things that you hope not to use, such as a fire extinguisher.

Scan Paperwork

If you have papers that are piling up in a filing cabinet or box, why not scan them and burn or shred them? The fact is, most of the papers you keep around are no longer necessary. For many people, it’s more of a worry that they may need them in the future. If that’s the case, most paperwork can be scanned or photographed and then gotten rid of. Of course, there are some things to be kept, such as important papers and passports, etc. but you should do your best to get rid of the extra papers.

Release Your Obligations

How many pieces do you have in your home that you feel obligated to keep because they were gifts? Before the removal service arrives, you should do your best to take these items out of the house and focus on what you truly wish to bring into your new home. In most cases, no one will ever know that you got rid of an old gift.

Once you’ve reduced the amount of clutter you need to move, you’ll save quite a lot of time with the house movers and removals company.
