Tips to Help Your Dog Settle Into a New Home

Moving your dog to a brand new home can be stressful and challenging for you both. You may be worried about how your companion is going to settle into their new environment or how they will cope with the change. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help your furry friend settle into a brand new house. Read on to find out more.

Reassure your dog

You may be surprised by how much simply talking to your dog can help reassure them during a move. Speak to your dog in a calm voice to reassure them that is everything is ok and that there is nothing to be scared about. Keep in mind that animals easily pick up on your emotions and stress levels. It is inevitable that parts of your move are going to be stressful, however, you should try to give off happy and calming vibes around your companion.

Maintain a normal routine

Your dog is undoubtedly used to a routine and schedule, and it is important to keep this as normal as possible. Big changes can be stressful not only for humans, but for our furry friends too, which is why it is important to keep routines as regular as possible. If your dog is used to getting up at a certain time, eating breakfast and then going for a walk, try to follow this same schedule when you move into your new home.

Give your dog attention

Moving into a new property can be overwhelming and it may well feel like your to-do list is never-ending. Put spending quality time with your dog at the top of your to-do list each day. While you will have many things to organise and sort out, remember to spend time with your dog and to give them lots of love during this unsettling period.

Try to be at home for the first week

When you first move in, try to arrange to be home for the first week. Not only will this give you time to unpack and get used to your new surroundings, but it will also ensure that your dog can adjust to the new situation with you there for reassurance. During this unsettling period, start spending time away from your new house in small increments so that your pet can slowly adjust to being in their new environment alone. If you are starting a new job, ask someone who is familiar to your dog to come round and keep them company or take them for walks when possible.
