Relocating to a new home can be incredibly exciting, whether it’s a new UK city, abroad or just around the corner. However, there are plenty of jobs to do before you move, and perhaps one of the least fun of these is the packing part. It may initially seem like an easy task, but packing can take months and organising which rooms to do first can feel like a military operation in itself.
As expert removalists, we use this blog to explore some top packing tips for when you need to move house.
This may seem like an obvious thing to do, but making a clear checklist to follow will make your life a lot easier and help guide you through the process. If you’re not sure where to start in terms of inventory and making a checklist, use our helpful domestic inventory checklist to help you to make a start.
Once your inventory and checklist of possessions have been drafted, start packing one room at a time. By packing up room by room, you’ll stay organised and it will deter you from mixing boxes. Begin by packing the rooms or items you need the least such as the spare room, the Christmas decorations or garden tools, then finish with necessary areas such as the kitchen, bedrooms and the bathroom.
When packing up your possessions, be aware of your box weight and avoid packing boxes that weigh more than 30 pounds. This way, you’ll ensure that no boxes break which can cause damage to both the items and yourself, as lifting heavy boxes puts your at risk of a back injury. With this in mind, aim to pack lighter items into bigger boxes, such as clothing, and pack heavier items into small boxes, such as books.
Again, it might seem like an obvious step to take, but labelling boxes is one of the most helpful things you can do and you may be surprised on how much can get missed. By labelling your box with what the items are (such as books, clothes, electricals etc) or which room they belong to (kitchen, kid’s bedroom, study etc), you can make life so much easier for yourself. All it takes is a quick scribble on the side of the box with a black marker or white label! Plus, by writing on the side, you’ll be able to quickly identify the box you need when they’re stacked up.
